Disclaimer

Bristol manufactures water-based acrylic interior colours with an absolute-matt finish and high levels of pigment. Achieving such a luxurious finish comes with the compromise they are not water resistant and can mark easily unless protected with a Bristol water based lacquer or binder.

Exterior Use

Bristol paints are not recommended for exterior use (excluding Ultramarine 1035x and White 1000x) as they are not made for this application. However, we understand that many customers love our colours and have had great success working outside our recommendation.

With any surface you must rub-down removing any lose or old paint finishes and prepare surface with Bristol White 1000x, this must be a uniform white surface otherwise the finish colour may look patchy. For best results apply two coats of colour, any more or less than two may affect the final colour.

To make any Fluorescent or Primary paint more hard wearing add 10-20% AquaPlus, with the addition of AquaPlus there is no need to apply a lacquer. However, it is not recommend to use Bristol paint on horizontal surfaces where water will sit or high traffic areas such as kitchen unit doors.

Wood & Metal (interior only)

When painting wood use White 1000 as a base-coat/primer. For metal use ExpoMulti as a base-coat/primer, always follow the recommended application advice below.

To make any Fluorescent or Primary paint tougher add 10-20% AquaPlus, with the addition of AquaPlus there is no need to apply a lacquer. However, it is not recommend to use Bristol paint on horizontal surfaces where water will sit or high traffic areas such as kitchen unit doors.

Lacquers

A lacquer can be applied for added durability. Please note this will tend to slightly darken the original colour and most Bristol lacquers will not protect the paint from sun and UV light.

Application on Pre-Painted Surfaces

The following instructions mainly relate to pre-painted surfaces as these can be more problematic. If the following steps are not taken the finish of the Bristol Matt paint will be affected.

Ensure surface to be painted is sound, clean and degreased. Any non-Bristol paint including and not limited to: vinyl matt, silk and gloss paints should be rubbed down and removed before applying an undercoat.

Apply an appropriate Bristol white matt acrylic water-based undercoat: White 1000 for interior use and White 1000x for exterior use. Please note that we strongly recommend the use of a white base-coat with all vibrant, fluorescent and metallic paint, this includes Ultramarine 1035 and Ultramarine 1035x, exterior.

Treat new plaster and filled areas with stabilising solution

All Bristol colours can be diluted with water and intermixed within the same palette range.

Further durability can be achieved by using one of our specific water based lacquers and coatings
